The person behind the practice

Hey there! I'm Katie Branum, MS, CCC-SLP — and if you've landed here, chances are you're a parent who wants more for your child than a rushed appointment squeezed between insurance paperwork and a waiting list. I get it, and I'm so glad you're here.

I've spent the last several years doing what I love most: sitting on the floor with kids, following their lead, and helping them find their voice — whether that's spoken words, an AAC device, or something beautifully in between. I earned my Master of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Old Dominion University and my linguistics degree from the University of Mary Washington, but honestly, the classroom never stopped after graduation. I'm always learning.

"I believe every child communicates — my job is to meet them exactly where they are and help them go further than they ever imagined."

My clinical roots are right here in the Lowcountry. Before opening my own practice, I spent three years at a pediatric private practice in Bluffton and have worked as a school-based therapist supporting students from preschool through 5th grade on Hilton Head Island. I've worked with kiddos across a wide range of needs — articulation, language, fluency, autism, ADHD, and AAC — and I genuinely love the variety.

One thing I'm especially passionate about? Gestalt Language Processing. It's a newer, evidence-based lens for understanding how some children — especially autistic kids — naturally acquire language, and it's been a game-changer for families I've worked with. I've even trained other therapists in it! I'm also LAMP certified and experienced with a wide range of AAC systems, so if your child is minimally speaking or uses an alternative communication device, you're in good hands.

Outside of the therapy room, you'll find me volunteering with the Lowcountry Autism Foundation and cheering on the families in this community. I love what I do, and it shows. 🌿

Why Self-Pay?

Better care, your way

Choosing a self-pay practice isn't just about skipping the insurance headaches — it's about choosing a completely different kind of care. Here's why families across the country are making the switch, and why it might be the best decision you make for your child.

🎯

Therapy Built Around Your Child

No insurance company decides how many sessions your child gets or which goals are "approved." Frequency, duration, and focus are driven entirely by your child's needs — not a billing code.

⏱️

No Waiting Lists

Insurance-based clinics often have months-long waitlists. Private pay practices can get your child started quickly, which matters when communication development is time-sensitive.

🔒

Your Privacy, Protected

Insurance claims create a permanent medical record. With self-pay, your child's diagnosis and therapy history stays between you and your therapist — no third-party access required.

🌿

Modern, Evidence-Based Methods

Insurance often only covers "approved" approaches. As a self-pay provider, Katie can use cutting-edge methods like Gestalt Language Processing and naturalistic AAC that insurers frequently deny.

👨‍👩‍👧

Real Family Partnership

Smaller caseloads mean more time for parent coaching, home program support, and collaboration with your child's teachers and other providers — all the things that make progress stick.

📋

Transparent, Simple Pricing

Know exactly what you're paying — no surprise bills, surprise denials, or EOBs arriving months later. Superbills are available so you can seek out-of-network reimbursement on your own terms.

Insurance-Based Therapy

  • Limited sessions approved per year
  • Goals must meet insurer criteria
  • Long waitlists at in-network providers
  • Claims create a medical record
  • Outdated or "approved" methods only
  • High therapist caseloads
  • Surprise bills & denials after the fact

Self-Pay with Katie B SLP

  • Sessions based on clinical need, not caps
  • Goals tailored entirely to your child
  • Get started sooner, not months later
  • Privacy between you and your therapist
  • Latest evidence-based approaches used freely
  • Small caseload = more focus on your family
  • Clear upfront pricing, no surprises

* Superbills are available upon request — many families with PPO or out-of-network benefits receive partial reimbursement directly from their insurance provider. Ask about this during your free consultation.

Questions? We've got answers.

Here are the things families ask most often. Don't see yours? Reach out — Katie loves a good question.

Ask Katie Directly
No referral is needed to begin services at Katie B SLP! You can reach out directly to schedule a free consultation. Some insurance companies may require a referral for reimbursement purposes, so if you plan to submit superbills, it's worth checking with your insurer first.
Trust your instincts — you know your child best. Common signs include difficulty being understood by others, limited vocabulary for their age, trouble following directions, stuttering, avoiding social interactions, or frustration when trying to communicate. When in doubt, a free consultation is a great first step, and an early evaluation can always provide peace of mind.
Yes! Katie offers teletherapy for families who prefer to meet virtually, are outside the Bluffton/Hilton Head area, or have scheduling constraints. Teletherapy is just as effective as in-person sessions for many goals and can be a great fit for older children or parent coaching sessions.
A superbill is an itemized receipt for therapy services that includes all the information your insurance company needs to process a claim. You pay Katie directly at the time of service, then submit the superbill to your insurer for potential out-of-network reimbursement. Many families with PPO plans get a significant portion of costs reimbursed. Katie provides superbills upon request.
Gestalt Language Processing (GLP) is a natural language acquisition style where some children — often autistic kids — learn language in whole chunks or "gestalts" (like phrases from videos or books) rather than single words. It's not a disorder — it's a different path to language! Katie is trained in this approach and uses it to support children in moving through the stages of natural language development at their own pace.
Session frequency is always based on your child's individual needs, goals, and your family's schedule. After an evaluation or consultation, Katie will make a recommendation — which could range from weekly sessions to monthly check-ins with a strong home program. There are no one-size-fits-all prescriptions here!
Absolutely! Private therapy and school-based services can complement each other beautifully. School SLPs focus on how communication impacts learning in the classroom, while private therapy allows for more individualized, intensive, or specialized support. Katie has experience working within Beaufort County schools and is happy to collaborate with your child's school team.
